"Stuck" - Ten Point Plan

Title

The name of the film is “Stuck”.

Genre / Tone

The title is based under the genre of Social Realism. As it was written, I tried to make the film seem as realistic to life as possible; realism being one of the defining features of Social Realism. The tone of the film, however, shifts. The tone shifts from being slightly dark, to having lighter elements to it towards the end.

Setting (Time & Place)

The film is set in a High School design and technology block. The action takes place both inside the building, and the plaza outside. The action takes place mid afternoon, moving towards the evening.

Main Character

The main character in the film is Charlie. Charlie is 18, and could only be described as your average teenager, wearing “normal” clothes, and having above average intelligence. He is an intellectual, preferring to use words rather than his fists, thinking through problems that are put in front of him.

Want / Need / Obligation

Early on in the film, Charlie’s work is destroyed by a younger year, who drills several large holes into it. Charlie leaves his building, and sees the same young boy bullying one of his classmates from a bench that he was sitting on. Charlie is driven by the want for some form of revenge for what the boy had done to his work. However, this is not revenge in the traditional sense; Charlie wants to embarrass the boy, but at the same time, stick up for his classmate. Opposition The opposition for Charlie is the young boy, Ryan. Ryan is cocky, arrogant, and could be described as a “Chav”. Ryan’s personality is not dissimilar to the opinions that older students have about younger children in school; they are small, get in the way, and have mouths larger than their bodies.

Catalyst for Change

As he leaves the technology block, Charlie sees one of his classmates being bullied by the same boy that destroyed his work. He sees this, and has to make a decision: does he stay being passive, and not standing up for actions taken against him, or does he try to make a change, and defend himself?

Climax

The film climaxes with a confrontation on the school bench. Charlie faces up to Ryan, after telling his classmate that he has everything covered, and could handle himself. Ryan prepares to punch Charlie, but Charlie dodges out the way, and lets Ryan sit down. Resolution Unbeknownst to Ryan, Charlie has applied industrial strength glue to the back of the chair. Ryan has sat down, and ultimately become stuck fast. He sits, while his friends stand back and laugh at him.

And the audience feels... (Themes)

The defining theme within the film is one of ingenuity. Instead of simply beating up the younger boy that is giving him trouble, he thinks of a different solution; one that requires less muscle, and more brainpower. He wants to embarrass the boy, instead of just beating him up. An issue that is represented within the film is one of the challenged social hierarchy that can be seen in some schools, an issue that I have seen myself in my own school. Another theme present in the film is Youth. Within the film, I wanted to challenge some social conventions, but adhere to others. For example, the younger boy is rude, violent, something that (stereotypically) might be expected of some younger boys, but the older boy is more intelligent, and thinks to solve his problem, instead of fighting, as some social conventions may suggest.
